CHAPTER 8
How to Safely Jump Out of a Plane (Tips for Preempting Risk)
I was looking out the window as the airplane climbed in altitude, watching as the buildings and cars became smaller and smaller and I couldn’t spot the landing site anymore.
The pilot announced, “We’re getting close to 10,000 feet,” and my heart just sank.
I started to wonder why a perfectly sane adult would decide to jump out of a perfectly safe airplane.
I’d always considered myself risk averse.
At the age of twenty-two, I had my own car insurance, health insurance, and even a retirement savings account.
I wasn’t the type to go skydiving.
But my friend had convinced me to go, and I had signed all my rights away before I got on the plane.
I was beyond the point of no return.
Minutes later, I’d be hurtling toward the earth whether I liked it or not.
Despite all the adrenaline and doubt I had in the moment, jumping out of the plane was actually a fairly calculated risk.
Prior to the plane ride, I had attended an eight-hour Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) training course for first-time skydivers who want to jump out of a plane solo—you learn the skills to skydive alone, without an instructor attached to your back, after they help you take the initial leap from the plane.
We talked about how skydivers spend three hours painstakingly packing their chutes using a technique that significantly increases the likelihood the chute will open correctly.
We learned that there are two different cords to trigger your chute in case the first doesn’t work.
We talked about what to do if your chute didn’t open fully and how to correct it midair.
We learned how to fall in a way that minimized the number of broken bones in our bodies in a worst-case scenario.
When you start to learn more about all the safety measures of the sport, you realize that some of the people you view as the biggest risk takers are also the people who are the most risk averse.
They go through great lengths to make sure that risks don’t manifest, but they also learn the skills to know exactly what to do should risks arise.
