What should we do when our students don’t do homework? Why can’t we make everybody finish the same homework?
My friend and I just talked about these knotty problems today. What jumped into my head first was that “Who the hell invented ‘homework’?” Yeah! Why do students need to do homework? Why do teachers need to guarantee students’ learning results with homework?
Well done! Roberto! Nowadays, homework has become a punishment for teachers and parents, too! ( If he is alive, he might say that’s just our own choice. He might say he is just the one who invented it.)
So rather than giving some effective suggestions or solutions about “inspiring students to do more homework,” I would like to share a bloody truth here. Why can’t we make every student, every parent or every staff do the same thing to achieve a same result? Because even though we can control our decisions, we still can’t control the outcomes. ( You can also consider this as my perfect excuse. )
This pain isn’t just tasted by teachers in collecting homework. It is also tasted in another realms of our lives.
People choose to go traveling everyday, one day they might get traffic accidents.
People choose to marry to rich guys, one day they might get dumped.
People choose to be a full time mother , one day they might get bored and depressed.
People choose to run a book shop, one day they might get irritated with the time consuming chores and customers.
People choose to assign homework, one day they’ll get agitated about not having all of the perfect homework back.
People choose to send messages to some close friends or some not that close customers, they shouldn’t require anyone to reply (in a sec).
People choose to have babies, unfortunately, they can’t never control who the babies are going to be.
We were born to not control any outcome.
Maybe some people would bristle at what I just said. These people usually use all kinds of tools to reach their dream outcomes. They usually have their overbearing perfectionism. They always have their plans and vision. They are always successful at getting what they want!
It seems that they are really good at controlling the results. In fact, they just do a lot of work before reaching the results. They’ve done something when “they are doing it”.
So why are we good at assigning homework but bad at collecting them back? Why are we good at telling ideas but bad at making them real? Why are we good at making commitments but bad at executing it ? Why are we good at boosting but bad at doing it ? Why are we good at creating problems but bad at solving them?
Because we are not actually “doing”them.“Doing it” is the only way to release your pain of having nothing done. “Checking homework as a daily or weekly routine”is the only way to collect kids’ homework.
Goodnight!
