" I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather.. "

从这前半句话听起来,这爷爷真是很有福份,得享天年,寿终正寝。可是再看完后半句:
“Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.”
“而不是像坐在他车里的乘客那样大喊大叫。”
这时候才恍然大悟:原来这老爷子是开着载满人的车子睡着了而酿成车祸死于非命的!
英语中有这样一种句型,通常分两个句子。前半句抛出一个误导读者的包袱,让读者沿着正常思路作出推断或者期许。后半句急转直下,出人意表,给读者一个截然不同的结局。读者通常需要咀嚼回味半天,才缓过神来,发现自己被误导上当,还不得不叹服作者的妙思巧计。请再看一例:
"I saw six men kicking and punching the mother-in-law. My neighbour said ‘Are you going to help?’ I said ‘No, six should be enough."
(我看到六个家伙对我岳母拳打脚踢的。我邻居说,“你还不出手帮一下?”我说,“不用了。六个人应该足够了。”)
自己的岳母被一帮人欺负,有人叫你帮忙,正常思维的人肯定以为是要去帮岳母。谁知最后一句令人大跌眼镜:原来这家伙袖手旁观,见死不救!
"During sex, my girlfriend always wants to talk to me. Just the other night she called me from a hotel."
(我女朋友做爱时老要跟我说话。有天晚上,她从一家旅馆打电话给我。)
第一句让你以为她激情澎湃时甜言蜜语,第二句才让你明白她红杏出墙!
"I ran into my ex the other day, hit reverse, and ran into him again."
(那一天,我碰到我的前任了。我挂了倒车档,又碰了他一回。)
第一句中利用了英语短语“run into”(1.撞见 2.碰撞)的歧义,让你以为是一场无意邂逅。第二句才开宗明义,摆明是一场有预谋的仇杀!
"I ran three miles today. Finally I said, “Lady take your purse.”
(我今天跑了三里路。最后我才说,“这位女士,钱包还是还给你吧。”)
第一句,让你以为这是一名运动健将。后一句不打自招,原来是抢钱包的小偷!
误导,并不都是坏事。像这种刻意的误导,引人入胜,奏“山重水复疑无路,柳暗花明又一村”之效,让语言更有张力与层次,也是一种启迪心智的游戏文章。
