We had fun with Ultraviolet in 2018, but this year we're ready to move on from the mysteries of the cosmos and dive deep into the ocean.
the cosmos
表示“宇宙”,英文解释为“the whole universe, especially when you think of it as a system”,此处从the cosmos到ocean的转变即指2018年的Ultra Violet(紫外光色)到2019年Living Coral(珊瑚橙色)的变化。
Pantone has announced that Living Coral is the 2019 color of the year. The color authority has bestowed the honorable title on a special hue every December for the past 20 years, taking into account fashion, decorating, design and cultural trends, as well as “how colors can embody our collective experience and reflect what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time,” according to press release from Pantone.
bestow
表示“授予;给予;赠给”,英文解释为“To bestow something on someone means to give or present it to them.”,举个🌰:
The United States bestowed honorary citizenship upon England's World War II prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill.
hue
表示“颜色;色调;色度”,英文解释为“a colour or type of colour”,如:a golden hue 一种金黄色调;
补充:of every hue / of all hues (=of many kinds) 各种各样的
“Color is a language and color is inextricably linked to the culture,” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, tells TIME of this year's selection of the color coral. “We see the environment taking on an even greater role in the world we live in today for two primary reasons, one being how connected we are to technology. Because we are so connected to something that's not real, so to speak, we really need to find that balance closely and intimately with something that is real and you don't get more real than nature.”
inextricably
/ˌɪnɛksˈtrɪkəblɪ/
be inextricably linked/bound up/mixed etc
表示“紧密相连,密不可分”,英文解释为“if two or more things are inextricably linked etc, they are very closely related and affect each other”,举个🌰:
Physical health is inextricably linked to mental health.
Pressman says the second aspect is “our understanding of our natural resources…we look at the concerns of what's taking place in nature, the depletion of natural resources. One of the things that we get from nature is energy. When we think about the shifting nature of our world, here's a color that's animating and life-affirming.”
depletion
表示“减少;减小;缩小”,英文解释为“a reduction in something”,如:the depletion of the ozone layer 臭氧层的变薄,举个🌰:
Increased expenditure has caused a depletion in our capital/funds.
life-affirming
表示“积极向上的,使人向上的,催人奋进的”,英文解释为“If you describe something as life-affirming, you mean that it makes you feel positive about life.”,举个🌰:
The exhibition is an enjoyable and, ultimately, life-affirming experience.
The spirited shade of Living Coral has popped up everywhere from fashion runway shows to warm beauty looks, progressively on social media influencer posts and in consumer packaging. It brings to mind, recreation, leisure, celebration — aspects of life that are needed to balance the many challenges faced in the current day and age.
shade
表示“(色彩的)色度,浓淡,深浅”,英文解释为“a particular type of red, green, blue etc”,如:a bright shade of pink 一种艳粉色,举个🌰:
This hair colouring comes in several shades.
Fittingly, Living Coral also speaks to the urgency of respecting and preserving nature and natural resources. Coral reefs are an important part of the global environment, both protecting and nurturing marine ecosystems and helping with water filtration and marine life reproduction, among other things. With critical issues with climate change and other environmental threats taking center stage in recent months, this color and its connection to nature feels especially relevant.
Coral reef
filtration
表示“过滤”,英文解释为“Filtration is the process of filtering a substance.”
This enzyme would make the filtration of beer easier.
enzyme
/ˈɛnzaɪm/
An enzyme is a chemical substance found in living creatures that produces changes in other substances without being changed itself.”
take center stage
表示“成为关注的焦点”,英文解释为“to be at the centre of attention”,举个🌰:
She always likes to take center stage in whatever she does.
“The whole process is one that requires thoughtful consideration and analysis,” Pressman said. “It's something we talk about on a year-round basis.”
