Start Writing Poems at Age Forty
by Shuang Yi
Start writing poems at age forty.
Why? He asks himself.
Fifty year old poets have been writing for thirty years.
Twenty year old poets have written two hundred poems.
Start writing poems at age forty.
Why? He chuckles.
He looks at the reflected image in the water.
That is not an artsy dude,
but more like a pancake squashed flat by life.
With a little more pressure,
some rebellious bubbles and broken phrases
pop out of the cracks.
He takes a breath and starts writing poems,
an attempt to pump himself up again.
If not, he would use the poems as salt added to the pancake.
This will make it a better toast.
