What is Ralph’s first reaction when he realizes that no grown-ups are on the island?
--The delight of a realized ambition overcame him.
Why is Ralph not really interested in Piggy when they meet?
--Because Ralph thought piggy was fat and what he said was boring. Moreover, Ralph was focusing on finding out where he was and if there were any grownups.
What shows that Piggy is smarter than Ralph?
-- Piggy told Ralph that there were no grownups on the island, and gave him a suggestion to use the conch shell to summon other boys for a meeting.
What two purposes did the conch shell serve?
--The first purpose was to summon other boys for the group meeting. The second purpose was during the group meeting, only the people who were holding the conch shell could be speaking.
Why did the last group of boys have square black caps and long black cloaks on?
-- Because they were in a choir, and they had square black caps and long black cloaks as team uniforms.
Who was always “throwing a Faint” and why?
-- Simon was alway throwing a faint because of his bad health conditions.
What four factors influenced the boys to acclaim Ralph as leader?
-- Ralph was holding the conch shell, his size was big, he was diplomatic, and he was very handsome.
Why was Jack the most obvious leader?
--Because Jack radiated authority and manipulation (by commanding on the choir, for instance).
Ralph has been described as handsome, courageous, intelligent, diplomatic, yet thoughtless. Find evidence in chapter 1 to prove this.
-- He has a strong body and bright eyes, so he is handsome ( can be seen from the description in page 6). He was eager to experience everything (swam in the lagoon, for example). Also, he went on the exploration journey with other two boys eagerly, so he is courageous. He made the rules for the boys and suggested the idea of expedition on the island, so he is intelligent. He built a good relationship with Jack, and smartly avoided some conflicts. For instance, when the boys were choosing him as the leader, Jack felt upset, so he immediately said that Jack is in charge of the choir. Therefore, Ralph is diplomatic. However, Ralph betrayed Piggy by spreading his nickname out, and thus made Piggy upset ( and he did not care about it). So he is thoughtless.
List and describe the three main characters.
-- Ralph: The protagonist in the novel. He attempted to hold order within boys. He represents rational and civilizing humans. However, his kindness is imposed by the society. He is not totally kind in heart—as can be seen from his early actions towards Piggy.
--Jack: The antagonist in the novel. He attempted to manipulate other boys by his own will. He represents savage and irrational human beings, as opposed to the rational and civilizing side that Ralph represents.
--Piggy: Piggy attempted to hold order within boys and keep the boys being rational and realistic. He represents rational and civilizing human beings, too.
Why is this chapter called “The Sound of the Shell”?
-- Because the sound of the conch shell opens up the whole story, so it is used in the title as a symbol.
How do the boys find out they are on an uninhabited island?
-- They went on an expedition and found that they were surrounded by the sea. Also, they only found wild animals and uninhabited tangles. So they drew the conclusion that they were on an uninhabited island.
