The Benefits of Volunteering
Since 1985, when the United Nations first declared December 5 “ International Volunteer Day ”,millions of people around the world have seized the chance to volunteer. China alone currently has 4.5 million volunteers registered, who have together contributed over 4.5 billion hours of their time. As far as i am concerned, volunteering develops people in ways that no other activities can.
Volunteering is unique in that people who take part in it do so to help strangers for nothing in return. Most people will gladly help strangers in return for money or other compensation, but how many will do so for free? Volunteering, therefore, develops a spirit of unselfishness and compassion in those who choose to volunteer. In addition, volunteering can build a strong sense of worldwide community; the basis for help is simply the humanity thai is common to both those in need and those giving help. Volunteering makes us more true human, setting us apart from the animals, who generally act only out of instincts for self-defense.
I believe that volunteering is, therefore, something that all of us who have the time and the opportunity should take part in. It is the best way to develop an unselfish, compassionate, noble and true human character.
