Something I learnt from speech
In this paperthe experience of speech given by President Obama, will be presented. A briefsummary of the speech will be stated first. Then the reason why it is a goodspeech and speaker will be shown. At last, the thing I learnt from speech willbe discussed in two aspects: the speaking skills and a wonderful narration ofthe speech.
President Obama attended2012 graduates’ ceremony at Barnard College, delivering a impressive speech.Aiming to encouraging graduates to step forward, Obama gave them threeinstructive suggestions and several inspiring words.
As we all know,President Obama is experienced in speeches for he has given the audiences avariety of powerful speeches. It is those speech experiences that make him be anexcellent speaker. What makes this speech impressive was that it provided mewith his fluctuant tunes and proper diction.
As for speakingskills, I would like to pick up something important to share them with you. Inthis speech, President Obama talked to audiences at a moderate speed, whichmeant he paused from time to time. He paused for about 2 seconds or more whenhe emphasized the need of audiences. It set me a good example of speakingspeed. Most importantly, he made eye contact with audiences all the time, smiled if necessary. What’s more, far from standing still, he made someappropriate gestures while talking to people, which showed his confidence.
Not only didspeaking skills impress me a lot, but also a wonderful narration. Whatattracted me most was parallelism. Parallelism was employed so much inpresident’s speech, so that it made the language elaborate, the rhymeharmonious, tones convincing. It is advisable to illustrate with examples. Obamasaid, “That’s how we achieved women’s right. That’s how we achieved votingright. That’s how we achieved workers’ right. That’s how we achieved gay right. That’s how we’ve made this Union perfect.” He thought highly of achievementsmade by citizens, appealing everyone to achieve their own goals and build abetter and gorgeous country. Besides, Obama convinced people with his personalexperience, which shortens the distances between audiences and he.
Few coulddispute that we must adhere to the principle of making study serve thepractical purpose. I decided to put the thing I learnt from the speech intopractice.
