Machine translation (MT) is slower and less accurate than human translation and there is no immediate or predictable likelihood of machines taking over this role from humans
Do you agree or disagree?
Machine are always designed to replace human beings for certain hard work or to free us from repeating and boring positions. Translating machines are also ones for these purpose. But in my opinion, though machines can ease the translators from the hard work of literal translating, they can hardly be eligible to take over humans, especially for site interpretation or face-to-face communication. The following paragraphs will illustrate this idea.
The merits of machines are evident for language translation. Firstly, machines are easy to produce, even in mass, while an eligible translator will spend years to practice to master related knowledge and shills. At the same time, good translators are always restricted in number because people with such talent are few. Secondly, machines are regarded more efficient because they can continue working without any fatigue, which is hard for human. Machines can even do the translation across a number of languages but human can never reach the similar level.
However, language translation involve so much things beside language itself, which are ‘missions impossible’for machines or any software. Different intonation of the speaker, the expressions on the face and even the body language, may change the meaning of a sentence dramatically, which can hardly recognize by the machine, let alone some ironic expressions. Cultural differences may be another barriers for machines. There are always different meanings for the‘seems same’word expressions, so the direct and simple translation from machines may lead to misunderstanding and even conflict for some important event. Thus, we cannot rely on machines for some important translating tasks.
In conclusion, machines are machines, and they can hardly replace humans for translation, at least in the near future. Indeed, translation machines and related translating software can only help to do some literal translation with low requirements. In a word, they are good assistants but not alternatives.
