is there anybody come from the city of Wuxi or Suzhou? can you recall the tone of the tickets seller?
I still clearly remember the voice of tickets seller even though it happened 20 years ago. What she said is a simple sentence "please buy the tickets after getting on the bus" . The Chinese is "上车请买票". so wonderful thing is when you heard this kind of voice at first time. that moment in my mind it's just like some angelic voice."上车请买票", try to feel it again.
if you were being to Xi'an, try to compare the voice of Xi'an and Wuxi bus tickets seller. For the same sentence of "please buy the tickets after getting on the bus" in Xi'an language and in Wuxi language, they are totally different feelings for you. let me try them for you. "上车来买票来" in Xi'an language, "上车请买票" in Wuxi language.
what factor cause such different tone?
based on my observation and study, it's the food people eating daily. different habit of eating creates the distinguished quality of voice.
Xi'an food has so much oil and salt. it makes the voice become thick and heavy. such like biang biang noodles, it's full of red hot oil and spices.
however Wuxi food has little oil and more sugar. so the voice is sweet and soft. the famous special food is sweet and sour spare ribs, called "糖醋排骨".
are these eating habits healthy?
in my opinion, there is no wrong or right of them. it is related to the environment people living in.
Xi'an is in the high yellow land of Northwest China with dry and cold weather. definitely the people living there need more oil to flat the skin and stomach.
on the other hand, Wuxi is in the flat land of East China with wet and warm weather. people don't need too much energy from food, so they like light and sweet tastes.
different habit of eating creates more diversity in the culture of life. for many people, including me, the most exciting aspect of travel, must be the experience for enjoying local food. listening the local opera is not only a hearing enjoyment, but also a tasting imagination. if you have the opportunity to know what food the performer ate, you may get the connection from voice to food.
People often says that eat what you want, drink what you want.
live on the moment is the best way we can enjoy. if you like sweet voice, eat food with less oil and more sugar. if you like thick voice, eat food with more oil and more salt. but be careful, every delicious food could not take too much for your health consideration.
