A Teacher I Know

There have been almost 100 teachers so far who taught me and affected me to some extent from primary school. Different teachers have different characteristics and teaching styles. Some are easygoing and warm-hearted and I feel free and relaxed in their classes. Some are strict and irritable and they make me stressful and frightened. No matter what they are like, I have learned something from them more or less.

When it comes the teacher I know, I would like to talk about a teacher in my high school. Mr. Zhang, my Chinese teacher, was thin and in medium height. Though he taught me a short period, it was a rewarding year.

He liked reading extensively and often encouraged us to read more. Before class, five minutes was left for us to share readings, such as the impressive articles and paragraphs. He often shared his favorite part as well as his thoughts with us.

Besides developing students’ reading habit, he also inspired us to think critically. Some news magazines were put in the class’ shelf and everyone was required to pick up a piece of news and comment on it in class. The strategies he taught us were really useful and I still use them in daily life. First, we stated the news clearly and then found out the reasons behind it. Last came the solution. He let us to imagine that if we were the person in charge, how we would deal with the problems. Not only did he teach us the logical thinking, but also helped us build social responsibility and ownership. This, I think, is the most valuable and practical knowledge I learned from him.

Mr. Zhang was the head teacher of our class. Unlike other classes’ teachers who worked separately, he closely worked with his team by meeting them once a month to study students’ academic performance. Corporation among teachers formed a good atmosphere and helped us with study more concretely.

He was not just a teacher for us, but also a close friend. He would join the morning exercise with us. He taught us life skills and time management. We shared our secrets openly and Mr. Zhang gave us useful advice. Also, we celebrated every student’ birthday in a simple way with people singing songs. He would send a special card as the birthday present. All these things made our class a close family. We still keep in touch with each other frequently.

Mr. Zhang also influenced us unconsciously, most by his action. Instead of telling students what needs to do and what is forbidden, we developed good manners by observing his behavior. For example, he picked up the waste and made the mops in order. We knew how to keep the classroom clean and tidy and no one dropped litter any more. He smiled at every colleagues and we learned to greet teachers even if we did not know them. There is no doubt that knowledge from textbooks is important. However, these manners are essential too which constitute personal quality.

It has been five years since graduation from high school. Most of the knowledge from the textbooks had slipped my mind. However, the truth and learning methods still benefit me.

After being taught for 15 years, I have formed my view of teaching by learning from various teachers. I will pass English knowledge to my students and develop their learning habits. I will guide them to be responsible and have good manner.

By taking advantage of the special class management and teaching methods given by Mr. Zhang, I will try my best to be a qualified teacher. At present, I will consolidate my teaching theory base. My one-year teaching practice help me better comprehend the theories. More practice need to be well connected with theories. There is still a long way to go to be an eligible teacher and I will take Mr. Zhang for example and try to realize my dream.
