An alliance is a group of countries or political parties that are formally united and working together because they have similar aims.
e.g. The two parties were still too much apart of form an alliance.
2. notoriously
To notorious means to be well-known for something bad.
e.g. The weather in Britain is notoriously changeable.
3. alienate
If you alienate someone, you make them become unfriendly or unsympathetic towards you.
e.g. The government cannot afford to alienate either group.
