In most countries, prison is the most common solution for the problem of crime. However, the more effective solution is to provide people with better education so that they do not become criminals. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

As a consequence of rapid social development, the role of prison seems to gradually become less important and there is a debate as to whether promoting education is a better solution for crime problem than prison. From my perspective, although prison is necessary for felons, a more effective measure to reduce crime is to offer better education.
the solution to sth ...的解决方法
犯罪[v.] commit a crime; offend/break/violate the law; behave illegally
罪犯[n.] criminal; prisoner; convict, culprit; law breaker; offender;
felons; brutal criminals; recidivists
遵守法律 obey/abide by the law
become the law-abiding citizens
To start with, extra education makes the individual more productive in the labour market and so boosts employment and wages. Simultaneously, individuals decide whether to commit crime by comparing the costs and benefits of criminal participation. This means that most crimes are forced by livelihoods and people with a stable income will not take risks to commit crimes. As ‘Les Misérables’,a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, described, Jean Valjean stole a loaf of bread to prevent his daughters from starving to death so that he was caught and imprisoned for five years in the Toulon prison. If he receives some education and have a job, his life will be completely different which means he can live the life of an ordinary people.

In addition, education can cultivate people’s sense that allows people to understand what is right or wrong. To be specific, by showing people some city news about the misery a criminal brings to a family, people become more righteous and helpful in order to prevent tragedy from happening. Meanwhile, legal education could further allow citizens to develop a sense of observing discipline and law. Therefore, such knowledge positively educates people to do the right thing and do not become criminals.
However, I think it is unrealistic to only depend on education to solve a crime problem. And prison also plays a significant role on reducing crime rates. Detaining felons in jail can not only make others who in this society feel safe, but also comfort the victims’ families to abstain from doing some extreme things harmful to society. In addition, going to prison which means people will lose their freedom, could be a very effective deterrent for offenders.
In a nutshell, although jail is an indispensable part of solving crime problems, better education is a more effective measures to solve them fundamentally.

To start with, adequate education makes the individual more productive in the labour market and then boosts employment and wages. This means that people with a stable income are less likely to take risks to offend laws, as most crimes are committed by those lacking proper livelihood. As ‘Les Misérables’,a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, described, Jean Valjean stole a loaf of bread to prevent his daughters from starving to death so that he was caught and imprisoned for five years in the Toulon prison. If he had received some education and had a job, his life would have been completely different, which means he can live the ordinary life.
In addition, education can cultivate people’s legal awareness that allows people to weigh the costs of breaking the law. To be specific, by showing the miserable consequences brought by crimes to individuals as well as society, people would become more alert and disciplined.
Therefore, such knowledge positively educates people to abide by laws and regulations and do not become criminals.
However, some people argue that it is unrealistic to only depend on education to solve a crime problem, and prison also plays a significant role in reducing crime rates. Detaining felons in jail can not only make others in this society feel safe, but also comfort the victims’ families. In addition, going to prison means people will lose their freedom, which gives rise to a very effective deterrent for offenders. however, even though the brutal criminals are supposed to be jailed, it is necessary to reform them in the prison so as to become the citizens contributing to society.
In a nutshell, although jail is an indispensable part of solving crime problems, better education is a more effective measure to solve them fundamentally.
