“Who's the most sought-after wanghong on Dou Yin at the moment?” “Ms. Mao (Mao Mao Jie) of course!”
To be honest, I hardly check on videos on this app because I know it will be highly addictive, until recently I heard this Ms. Mao from one of my friends.
At first sight, you would think this might be another clown at his wits' end trying too hard to catch the eyeballs. But when I finished most his videos, I almost cracked up, and I realized that he wasn't catapulted to fame for no reason.
Unlike most shoddily made videos where people make tacky jokes and put on pretentious shows, Ms. Mao stand out for his hilarous and exceptional performance. In most of his videos, Ms. Mao (who is actually a man) vividly impersonates middle-aged women speaking with funny accent in various situatios you can definitely relate to. As most of the comments say "How do you know us women better than ourselves?" His close observation about women and his great talent in acting these side-splitting anecdotes out earned him more than 10 millions fans in two months.
Another reason why his videos went viral has something to do with the funny accent of his dialect. A dialect has captivating aliveness. It well preserves the culture, customs and traditions in the place where it is spoken. The society is supposed to be diverse. So is its language. Recent years have seen a couple of movies featuring dialects in Southern China, like Dying to Survive, A Cool Fish, Long Day's Journey into Night. As nationawide standardized putonghua reform looms large, it is delightful to see someone bring people's attention to the beauty and liveliness of dialects and maybe, by extension, the protection of them.
His videos really made my day. Do you like Mao Mao Jie and why? Please leave your comments.
