Nestled in a corner of Beilun's downtown district is the very fine eatery simply known as‘Wei’ or in Chinese 蔚的西餐厅. This newly refurbished restaurant hosts a mainly western menu. Sincere thanks to the owner of the restaurant, who treated me and my friends with great courtesy.
The starters weresoup chowders, smoked salmon salad, the Parma ham appetizer, and the adventurous ‘chicken feet’ salad. For western palates this may be a bit too much... However, both the mushroom chowder and the pumpkin chowder with their aromas were positively salivating. The generous smoked salmon rolls in the salad were very moreish.
I also ordered theclassic French dish cod en papillote. While the sauce was a little too citric, it enriched the perfectly steamed cod steaks. When we opened up the package, the aroma of the steam fish was enchanting. The oranges almost gave it a spicy flavor. If you were to order any main, then this is the one.
Now, my own private test of any restaurant in China that calls itselfwesternin terms of cuisine, is how well they cook classical dishes – in this case it is theubiquitous spaghetti bolognaise. Thankfully, for this restaurant they did it very well. The pasta was al dente and the bolognaise sauce was as rich in taste as it was fragrant.
The mouthwatering Parma ham paired with melon slices on a bed of arugula was also a wonderful highlight. The bitterness of the salad and the saltiness of the Parma ham gave rise to a sweet and satisfying after-taste.
For the mains, we had several dishes. The Chilli Clam Tagliatelle was cooked with great skill. The pasta was al dente and the clams were spicy and juicy with every bite.
The final dish we ordered was the durian pizza! Surprisingly for us, we would love to order it again. I can’t describe the taste exactly, but if you like durian like I do, you have to try this.
So in conclusion, the atmosphere of the restaurant was intimate but not stuffy and the service was of a very good standard. So if you’re ever in Beilun and fancy something special, then bring yourself to Wei.
